Two of Keros

I had my first real conversation with another traveler tonight. I was eating alone when she asked if she could sit beside me. Within a few minutes, we discovered that we were both traveling through some of the same places, although for completely different reasons. She told me about where she had been. I told her where I was going.

We started comparing places we had traveled before, and when I mentioned Greece, her face lit up. She had been there last year too. That sent us down an entirely different path. We compared favorite places, laughed about things that had gone wrong, and discovered that we had somehow visited two of the same tiny towns. What are the chances?

Dinner turned into another drink and then another hour of conversation. At some point I realized neither of us had looked at the time in ages. It was just easy. One story led to another, which reminded one of us of something else, and suddenly the restaurant was beginning to empty around us.

When we finally stood to leave, we exchanged information and promised to stay in touch. I have no idea whether we actually will. Maybe we'll cross paths again somewhere on this trip. Maybe years from now I'll barely remember her name.

But tonight, two strangers sat down at the same table and, for a little while, we weren't strangers anymore. :)
