Willaq Umu

I heard his voice before I saw him. Several people were sitting in a courtyard when I arrived, gathered around an older man who held a staff while he spoke. I stayed near the edge because I wasn't sure whether I should interrupt, but someone motioned for me to sit. Behind him was an image of the Sun, and every so often he pointed toward it as he explained something to the younger people gathered around him.

I couldn't follow everything he said, but I could see that this was more than storytelling. He would explain something and then ask one of the younger people to repeat it. Sometimes he corrected them. At other times he demonstrated a movement or gesture and had them practice it until he was satisfied. They asked questions freely, and he seemed pleased when the questions became more difficult. Whatever they were learning mattered enough to be learned carefully.

When the gathering ended, I asked why it was so important that everyone remember the details exactly. He looked toward the mountains for a moment before answering. He told me that what a people know can disappear when no one carries it forward. Ceremonies, responsibilities, stories, ways of understanding the sacred -- someone has to learn them well enough to teach the people who come next.

I thought about that for the rest of the afternoon. Tradition can feel ancient and permanent when you encounter it already established, but perhaps it survives in a much more fragile way. One person learns from another. Then that person becomes responsible for remembering enough to teach someone else.
