The road climbed above the valley this morning, and when I finally reached the ridge I could see almost everything below me at once. Fields divided the slopes into careful shapes. Water moved through channels toward the terraces. Roads disappeared toward settlements I could barely see in the distance, and storehouses stood above the cultivated land. Near the highest point stood a man watching it all.

I expected someone with that much authority to be surrounded by attendants, but for a few minutes he simply stood there looking across the valley. Eventually several people approached him. One spoke about water. Another brought information about stored food. A messenger arrived from farther along the road. He listened, asked questions and gave instructions, and each person left carrying a different responsibility. Watching him, I began to understand that his view from the ridge was not simply impressive. He needed to see how all the pieces connected.

Later, someone explained the storehouses to me. Food could be accumulated and moved where it was needed. Roads carried people, messages and resources across enormous distances. Fields had to be worked, water managed, structures maintained and communities protected. None of those systems happened because one person performed every task. They depended upon organization and people knowing what they were responsible for.

When I looked back toward the ridge, the man was still there. From below, leadership had always looked to me like power. From up there, it looked much heavier. Thousands of ordinary lives depended upon systems continuing to work, and someone had to hold responsibility for the structure that connected them.
