From the Path: Today’s Reflections

I had an awkward conversation today. Someone at the place I'm staying told me that a road I wanted to take was closed. At least, that was what I thought she told me. A little later I mentioned it to someone else, and he looked completely confused. According to him, the road wasn't closed at all.

For several minutes, all three of us were trying to figure out what had happened. She kept explaining. He kept translating. I kept repeating what I thought I'd heard. Eventually we figured it out. The road wasn't closed. Part of it would be closed later in the afternoon.

It was such a small misunderstanding, but I was fascinated by how confidently I had walked away from the first conversation believing I understood exactly what she'd meant. She knew what she had said. I knew what I had heard. Those turned out to be two different things.

Artwork note

The artwork for this first edition of Quni Samiyuq was created with generative AI under my direction. I developed the concept, symbolism, composition, and visual direction for each card through an iterative process.
