From the Path: Today’s Reflections
I learned my first Quechua words today.
I'd heard Quechua around me since I arrived, but until this morning it had mostly been sound. I recognized the rhythm of it without understanding what anyone was saying. Then someone taught me a few simple words and made me repeat them until I stopped completely mangling the pronunciation.
Later that afternoon, I tried one. It was such a small thing. One word, spoken badly enough that I immediately wondered whether I had said it correctly. Then the woman I was speaking to smiled and answered me in Quechua.
I understood her. Only one word back, but for the first time I wasn't simply hearing the language around me. I had entered the conversation.
