From the Path: Today’s Reflections
I spent most of today watching a woman weave.
I thought I understood what she was doing at first. There were orange threads on one side and sky blue on the other, each neatly organized before reaching her hands. Then they began crossing.
She never seemed uncertain about which thread belonged where. She tightened one section, loosened another, changed the order, and continued. The colors that had looked so separate in their baskets gradually became part of the same textile. They did not disappear into one another. The orange remained orange. The sky blue remained sky blue. But where they met, a pattern began to appear that neither color could have made alone.
I asked her how she knew which threads would work together.
She looked at the cloth for a moment before answering, then pointed toward the river behind us. Two streams came down from different parts of the mountains and met farther into the valley. I had walked beside both without noticing where they joined.
When I looked back at the loom, I understood why she had pointed there.
The colors weren't becoming the same. They were learning how to occupy the same cloth.
I stayed until the light began to disappear. The textile was nowhere near finished, but enough of the pattern had emerged that I could finally see what she had known before she began.

Artwork note
The artwork for this first edition of Quni Samiyuq was created with generative AI under my direction. I developed the concept, symbolism, composition, and visual direction for each card through an iterative process.
