From the Path: Today’s Reflections

The sound hit the mountains and came back. I had heard pututus before, but never from this close. The first call stopped me in the middle of the road. The second seemed to travel farther, rolling across the valley until I could no longer tell whether I was hearing the shell itself or its echo returning from the stone. Then I saw the woman making it.

She stood above the road with the pututu raised firmly in both hands, her body planted beneath it as she sounded another long call. Two condors rested on the rocks nearby, one larger than the other, while the mountains opened behind them. Nothing about her seemed hesitant.

I didn't know what she was announcing. Perhaps everyone else did. What struck me was the certainty with which she sent the sound outward. She knew how to make the instrument speak, how much breath it required, and how to send its voice across a landscape far larger than herself.

I thought about all the things people know but never say. The warning withheld because speaking feels uncomfortable. The truth softened until nobody can recognize it. The conviction kept private because silence is easier.

Then she sounded the pututu again. A voice becomes powerful when it knows what it is calling others toward.

Artwork note

The artwork for this first edition of Quni Samiyuq was created with generative AI under my direction. I developed the concept, symbolism, composition, and visual direction for each card through an iterative process.
