From the Path: Today’s Reflections
The first sound was terrible. The young woman lowered the pututu and frowned at it as though the shell had personally disappointed her. The woman sitting beside her laughed and motioned for her to try again.
She adjusted her hands, raised the shell, breathed, and produced another uneven sound. This one carried farther. The woman nodded, then demonstrated. Her call moved across the valley so clearly that someone working on a terrace looked up.
That was when I understood the lesson.
She wasn't simply learning to make noise. For most of the afternoon, she practiced. Short calls. Longer ones. Different rhythms. Sometimes her teacher interrupted and demonstrated again. Sometimes she pointed toward the valley as if reminding her that whatever she sent outward had to reach someone beyond herself.
Eventually she produced a call that echoed against the mountains. A voice answered from somewhere I couldn't see. Her entire face changed. I thought about how easy it is to believe communication ends when we say something. Watching her, the opposite seemed true. The sound leaving the shell was only half of the exchange.
Someone else had to understand what it meant.

Artwork note
The artwork for this first edition of Quni Samiyuq was created with generative AI under my direction. I developed the concept, symbolism, composition, and visual direction for each card through an iterative process.
