From the Path: Today’s Reflections
I woke before sunrise because everyone else was already awake. Voices moved through the settlement while the sky was still dark, and by the time I stepped outside, families were walking toward the open gathering place above the terraces. People wore their finest cloth. Some carried vessels. Others brought food or bundles that I could not identify. No one seemed sleepy despite the hour. There was an energy in the road that made me feel as though I had arrived late even though the Sun had not yet appeared.
I followed them.
By the time we reached the gathering place, the eastern mountains had begun to separate from the darkness. People arranged themselves facing the horizon. Conversation gradually quieted until the whole crowd seemed to be waiting for one thing... The first light touched the highest ridge.
Someone near the front lifted a vessel. Others followed. A group began singing, low at first, and the sound moved through the crowd. When the Sun finally broke above the mountains, people raised their faces toward it. Some lifted their hands. Others held their vessels toward the light before drinking.
I had seen sunrise hundreds of times. I had never waited for it with this many people.
The warmth arrived slowly. First on my face. Then across my shoulders. Frost on the grasses began to shine. The terraces below us changed from gray to green and gold. Birds started calling from somewhere farther down the valley, and suddenly the entire landscape seemed awake.
Later there was food, dancing, drinking, and more ceremony than I could follow. I watched people greet one another, share vessels, and move through a day that seemed built around the fact that the Sun had returned.
Tonight I understand something I had never thought about before. Sunrise feels ordinary only because it happens every day.
Standing among people who had gathered deliberately to honor Inti made the familiar feel enormous again. Light returned. Warmth returned. Another cycle had begun, and everyone around me seemed to know that this was worth noticing.

Artwork note
The artwork for this first edition of Quni Samiyuq was created with generative AI under my direction. I developed the concept, symbolism, composition, and visual direction for each card through an iterative process.
